Qualifications to start the course

Students must have five GCSEs including English, Mathematics and Science graded A* – C. Additional requirements for this subject: Students must have GCSE Science (double or triple) at grade B or above and GCSE English at grade B or above.

Description of the subject

The Edexcel Biology course is well structured and consists of six units to be taken over two years. Students complete the first three units for an AS Level and all six units for an A2 Level award. Assessment is by end of Unit exams and practical coursework. Practical works are an important part throughout all the units.

What you will do

AS Level: Year 1

  • Unit 1: Life, Transport, Genes and Health (Exam).
  • Unit 2: Development, Plants and the Environment (Exam).
  • Unit 3: Practical Biology and Research skills (Up to 4000 words).

A2 Level: Year 2

  • Unit 4: The Natural Environment and Species Survival (Exam).
  • Unit 5: Energy, Exercise and Co-Ordination (Exam).
  • Unit 6: Practical Biology and Investigative Skills (with statistical analysis).

Future prospects

Previous students have embarked upon a wide range of careers including; Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Environmental Science and Physiology as well as careers in more broadly related areas, such as the food industry.
